What’s the difference between friable and non-friable asbestos?
Non-friable (bonded) asbestos is held together in a stable matrix (typically cement or vinyl) and cannot be crumbled by hand pressure when dry. Cement sheeting, eaves, vinyl floor tiles and fibro fences are all non-friable. Friable asbestos can be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry — including pipe lagging, sprayed insulation, fire-damaged ACM and severely degraded bonded sheeting. Friable material is significantly more dangerous because fibres can become airborne with minimal disturbance.
What’s the difference between Class A and Class B asbestos removal in Victoria?
Class B licences cover non-friable (bonded) asbestos — typically cement sheeting, eaves, vinyl floor tiles, fibro fences and similar bonded products. Class A licences cover friable asbestos and any ACM whose condition has degraded (fire-damaged, water-damaged, mechanically broken). Can I remove asbestos myself in Victoria?
Legally, an unlicensed person can remove non-friable ACM if it is less than 10 square metres and the work takes less than one hour in any 7-day period.
